We Found a Real Problem, But Couldn't Find Users
The problem was real, but the enemy was far stronger than it seemed.
Inventory Management App Experiment
The Problem
My friend's father has cloth manufacturing company. He suggests me to sell an inventory management apps to local cloth shopkeepers.
As he explains me, how in India most of the cloth shop's owners rely on their memory or notebook to remember the price of a cloth that they have bought from a wholesaler a month ago.
Means if they actually bought a single cloth for 100 rupees after a month, they forgot the actual price of cloth and sell it on 90 rupees making 10 rupees of loss.
This is not a hypothetical problem, it's real.
Validating the Problem
We both walk-in 50 cloth shops from small to medium size and ask for is this problem real or not.
As predicted, most of them rely on the memory.
60 to 70% business owner rely on memory and others use simple notebook for it and many few use a app or software.
So, idea and problem is clear, and we started to find users.
Finding Users
It seems like it will be successful, but when we tried to find users, it was the hard part.
Most of shops owner don't want to change or don't want to use the app.
As usual we predicted out biggest enemy for this business is habit which they have formed from many years.
Who uses books, they don't want to migrate into an app as they didn't want to change.
But still after asking for 20 shops we gets 2 users.
The Result
But we dropped the idea and provide app for free of cost as it was just an experiment.
The problem is real but solution need time to become a habit which we cannot afford.
